Sony, Fujitsu Tie Up for CMOS Image Sensor Production
October 01, 2010
Japanese Sony recently entered into a cooperation agreement with Fujitsu through its subsidiary Fujitsu Semiconductor, under which Sony allows Fujitsu to participate in part of the production process for image sensors used in Smartphones and digital cameras, Reuters reported on September 30. Through the tie-up with Fujitsu, Sony is capable of tapping burgeoning demand for image sensors and reducing production costs, while safeguarding its proprietary image sensor technologies in Japan, according to the same source. With technical support from Sony, Fujitsu Semiconductor will be in charge of 80%-90% of the manufacturing process for CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) image sensors for Sony at its factory situated in Mei Prefecture. Nonetheless, Sony will keep the remaining 20%-10%, the final and vital part of the manufacturing process to itself. Sony and Fujitsu both declined to comment on this report though.
